REAL ID for Upcoming U.S. Travel

If you’re planning to travel within the United States—especially by air—there are some important identification requirements you need to be aware of, especially as we approach May 2025.

🗓️ Now Through May 6, 2025

For travel completed before May 7, 2025, all airlines will continue to require a valid form of photo identification when you check in for your flight. A passport is recommended if you have one, but a standard driver’s license with a photo is also acceptable for domestic travel at this time.

🚨 Effective May 7, 2025: REAL ID Will Be Required

Beginning May 7, 2025, the REAL ID Act goes into full effect. From that point on, a standard driver’s license will no longer be accepted as valid identification for domestic flights.

To board any U.S. domestic flight (including tours with Collette or independent travel), you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or an alternate approved form of identification, such as a valid passport.

It’s important to note that:

  • The name on your ID must match your travel documents, and
  • Any costs incurred from rescheduling or modifying your reservation due to invalid ID will be the traveler’s responsibility.

✅ What Should You Do Now?

  1. Check your current ID to see if it has the gold or black star that indicates REAL ID compliance.
  2. If not, visit your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website for instructions on how to upgrade your license.
  3. If you don’t plan to get a REAL ID, be sure to carry a valid passport or another TSA-approved form of identification when flying.
